In our insistence in avoiding metal in the construction, we took a page out of James Wharram's book and used a lashed rudder hinge. I love using rope and lashing as much as possible in my engineering project. This rudder rotate smoothly while being plenty rigid to side load. I personally would have gone with paddle steering but Claire insisted on a rudder.
The sail is a mini Chinese lug with one reef panel. The thing is so small that my friend Steve said that if ti need actual reefing, the apocalypse is upon us already. Just the same , I think it looks pretty spiffy. I will shellack the whole thing tomorrow so Claire can finally go sailing.

I would love to be out guiding for Island Escapades with a greenland paddle.
Thanks!
