My latest project is finally in the water. I took it out with the kids to Racoon Island and we baptized it Megalodon. (the kids' idea of a cool boat name inspired by the prehistoric shark.) The boat looks like it will fulfill its mission as a family boat for camping outings.
The first impression is favorable. My friend Joe took it out with his kids and having never rowed before, came back dry. The turn of speed seems adequate. (if i was in a hurry, i d get a powerboat) I just love to watch the bubble through the translucent bottom when I am underway.
Of course, any boat that weighs half the weight of the rower will feel tippy at first but with Megalodon's generous flare it stiffen's up quickly as it heels. As any boat, this one is all about compromise. Short enough to be practical but too short to be really fast. Enough free board to be seaworthy but too much to be truly elegant. Light enough to be cartoppable but too sturdy to be carried on long distances.
No compromised on the satisfaction i get from building and rowing it though. This boat is the ticket for family fun....
The only modification that are required at this time is the addition of a small skeg to improve tracking in quartering waves. It will be done before the next outing.
Only one thing is bothering me now.... What should I build next>>>
